It needs to move through different gears as the engine increases speed—or revolutions per minute. That’s why they’re referred to as multispeed transmissions.

In electric vehicles, you’ll find what are known as single-speed transmissions, because the transmission doesn’t need to move to protect your vehicle or increase output.
